How to get started

Volunteers visit people's homes, so every check happens before anyone is assigned a home. The app shows what is left to do at each step.

You'll need: a government photo ID. Under 18? You'll need a parent or guardian to give consent instead.

  1. 1

    Create your free account

Sign up with your email or Google, then choose Volunteer.

  2. 2

    Verify your identity

A quick photo of your government ID and a selfie through Stripe Identity (renewed every 2 years). TCHF never stores your ID images.

  3. 3

    Police record check

Adults volunteering with Shovel For Seniors or Lawn Care For Seniors need a Vulnerable Sector Check from their local police service (valid for 3 years). Download your Volunteer Confirmation Letter in the app, apply, then upload the result. TCHF usually reviews it within 2 days.

  4. 4

    Sign the volunteer agreement

Read and e-sign it in the app. A parent or guardian co-signs for volunteers under 18. A coordinator then activates you.

  5. 5

Start a shift and pick up jobs

Start a shift on the spot or book one ahead. Jobs near you are listed in order: tap On my way, take before photos, do the work, take after photos.

  6. 6

    Collect your hours

Every shift is timed to the minute. Download a signed Hours Letter for school community hours whenever you need it.

High-school volunteers (under 18)

  • No ID check or police check of your own. A parent or guardian verifies their ID and e-signs consent.
  • You use your own login. Your parent or guardian sees your shifts and hours and can pause volunteering at any time.
  • Outdoor home jobs in daylight only, and you never go inside a home.
  • Signed Hours Letters for your school's community service hours.

Good to know

  • My TCHF is free. Some police services charge for a Vulnerable Sector Check; volunteers pay that fee, and some services lower or waive it when you show TCHF's confirmation letter.
  • Households provide the shovel or lawnmower. Volunteers bring their time.
  • Location is recorded only during in-person shifts, with your consent, so staff can keep you safe.
  • Message the TCHF team privately from the app. There is no chat between users.
